The Originals’ cast talked with Zap2it about the relationship between Elijah and Hayley.
“[Elijah] seems to covet those really, really complicated relationships. He’s a thousand years old. One would think that he had a better sense of self-preservation,” Daniel Gillies says. “It’s weird, isn’t it, that he sort of wants this. Could it be any more complicated and more of a minefield than choosing Hayley? It’s this burgeoning thing. And it seems like the more that they try and resist it, the more that it snowballs. They are definitely magnetically drawn to one another.
Joseph Morgan is excited for fans to see Klaus handle his brother’s relationship with the mother of his future child. “He won’t deal with that well,” Morgan says with a laugh. “There’s the idea that Elijah is usurping his role as father. Having this family is what Elijah wants most. You know, family above all. He’s taking on that role and that is addressed in the show. We’re not beating around that bush. We’ll absolutely make reference to the fact that you might think that he’s the father with the way that he’s acting. I think that was a really fair decision from the writers to create that romantic tension between those two characters because that really messes with Klaus.”
Claire Holt says that Rebekah senses what is going on between Elijah and Hayley, and isn’t a fan of it for more than one reason. “There’s a pang of jealousy there. She loves Elijah so much, and there’s another woman now that’s in town and is taking some of the attention of her brother,” Holt tells Zap2it. “I don’t think it’s too much of an issue now to the point where she’s not going to protect the baby or not going to feel like Hayley’s a part of the family. But I think she definitely acknowledges it and realizes that it may not be the smartest thing for Elijah to pursue. She knows that this could go very wrong. But she also thinks so highly of Elijah, so she’s not one to really tell him how to behave or act. It’ll be interesting to see how that goes.”
